Fifty and fabulous Joanne's story

I would love to hear your story? What are the experiences that shaped who you are today?

So much! Huge experiences have included marriage at 20, 3 amazing kids (and all the ups and downs of parenting for almost 24 years so far), then divorce before 40. Becoming a young(ish) granny recently too. A lifetime of secondary school teaching has also shaped me – and tired me out!

Turning 50 is a huge milestone, what are your thoughts around this?

I’m both excited to celebrate this milestone, as well as kind of scared of aging. I have major FOMO and feel like I have SO much to do (especially travel) because I married so young and didn’t travel as others did.

Research shows that a lot of women want to know that the work they do is significant, meaningful and embodies their highest potential. What do you think?

I agree. I’ve been second-guessing my career and feel like it’s now or never for any change. My mum changed her career and graduated as a nurse at 50, and I’ve always found that very inspirational.

What words of wisdom, based on your personal experience, would you like to share with others who struggle to see their own inner light and inner power?

It’s there! Hang out with those who reflect that back to you.

Who are the women that you find inspiring and have influenced you in some way? And why?

My mum, several colleagues I’ve had over the years, my daughters who have already experienced struggles beyond their years. Even Jacinda Arden!

Why are beautiful photos of yourself important to you now?

I’m never going to be this young again. I lost ten kilos last year, I don’t normally wear much makeup and I’d just love to be ‘glam’ for a while, but capture that moment to look back on.

Editor’s Note :

Joanne’s photo shoot was one of the easiest ones I’ve done mainly because she was such a natural poser with natural poise and grace that so easily translated into beautiful photos. She came for the shoot feeling a bit uncertain but as the shoot progressed, she relaxed and started enjoying herself and I could feel that uncertainty dropping off until she was happily and readily trying on gowns and getting into poses like a natural-born model. I did say to her several times, she could easily be a model.

A loving mum and a doting grandmother, spending time with her family is what gives her the most joy. She wanted to do this shoot not only to celebrate her milestone 50th birthday, but also because she wanted photos to share with her family. And some to hang on her bedroom wall to remind herself of how strong, wise and powerful she is.

Hope your photos are lifting your spirits to new levels, Joanne 😊
